Advocacy & policy

A steady voice at the Capitol

We work with state agencies and legislators — across the aisle — to weave walking, biking, and rolling into Montana's policy fabric, so safety outlasts any single project.

Our approach

Bipartisan, persistent, and practical.

Safe streets aren't a partisan issue — everyone wants their kid to get to school in one piece.

We show up session after session with data, real stories from Montana communities, and workable policy. We help legislators understand what Complete Streets and active-transportation funding actually do, and we connect them with the people those decisions affect.

The result is durable change — laws, plans, and funding that keep making streets safer long after the ribbon is cut.

Where we focus

Five priorities, one mission.

Our 2019 strategic plan organizes everything we do into five focus areas — each grounded in concrete goals.

01

Education

Provide skills and knowledge for people of every age to bike, walk, and roll safely.

02

Advocacy

Empower local and state organizations to act for a bike- and walk-friendly Montana.

03

Laws & Legislation

Improve local and state transportation laws, funding, and policies.

04

Outreach

Communicate the work, support events, and grow membership across Montana.

05

Organizational Sustainability

Operate Bike Walk Montana effectively, with a strong board and a steady financial base.

In the work

What that looks like in practice.

Complete Streets

Championing street design that safely serves everyone — whether they walk, bike, roll, or drive — as standard practice, not an afterthought.

State Bike & Pedestrian Plan

Helping shape Montana's statewide plan for active transportation, so walking and biking are built into how the state grows.

Bike camps in State Parks

Partnering on programs that get Montanans riding in some of the state's most beautiful places.

National Bike Summit

Bringing Montana's voice to Washington, D.C. every March to advocate for active transportation at the federal level.

Stay informed

Follow the bills, session by session.

We publish legislative updates so members know where active-transportation bills stand — and when their voice matters most.
