Montana's voice for bicyclists & pedestrians

Since 2012, Bike Walk Montana has worked to make walking, biking, and rolling safe and accessible — within and between communities, in every corner of the state.

Our mission

We make walking, biking, and rolling — for transportation or recreation — safe and accessible within and between Montana's communities.

Our vision

A Montana where every person, in every community, can move safely under their own power — whatever their age, ability, or zip code.

A bike-walk friendly state with innovative, safe, and accessible active transportation choices for people of all ages and abilities — well integrated into mainstream transportation and recreation. The result: an enhanced quality of life, with a vibrant economy, cleaner environment, and better health.

Our story

Statewide, and local, since 2012.

Bike Walk Montana began with a simple idea: that Montanans deserve streets and trails where it's safe to walk and bike — not just in our biggest cities, but everywhere.

For more than a decade we've carried that idea to the places where change happens — clinics writing walking prescriptions, classrooms teaching road safety, county roads getting their first shoulders, and the floor of the Capitol where Complete Streets policy is won or lost.

We're a small, statewide nonprofit powered by members, volunteers, and local chapters. Our board lives and works in the towns whose streets they're trying to improve — from the Bitterroot to the Hi-Line.

What we believe

The principles behind the work.

Safety first

Everyone has the right to get where they're going without risking their life to do it. Safe design and safe behavior, together.

Access for all

Age, ability, and income shouldn't decide whether you can walk or roll safely. We design for the whole community.

Local & statewide

Change is built in towns by the people who live there — and supported by a strong statewide voice that connects them.

Policy that lasts

We turn good intentions into Complete Streets policy and funding — the kind of change that outlives any one project.

Healthier & cleaner

Biking and walking are a simple, low-cost way to improve public health, ease traffic, and protect Montana's air and landscapes.

Good for the economy

Walkable, bikeable towns draw visitors and support local business — active transportation fuels travel tourism and Main Street alike.
